Proof

Design Statement

Proof took on a new meaning for me after my father passed away. I found solace in the raw and honest portrayal of grief shown through Catherine as a character. I really identify with a lot of the traits that make up Catherine as a character. I captured Catherine’s character through her costumes so there was no mistaking that she is struggling, with both her father’s death and the events of the play. Throughout the show Catherine wears articles of her father, Robert’s clothing, to emphasize her love for him and for symbolism of the traits that they share, passed down from father to daughter. Claire’s costuming illustrates the put together and New York socialite sister juxtaposed against Catherine’s loungewear clothes. Proof, is a play set in the late 1990’s, about a very real scenario families that take care of their terminally ill loved ones face.  The goal was for the clothes to feel real and not draw the audience away from the story, but add small details that would enhance it. I used a lot of garments of different textiles and patterns to emphasize how everyday people mix patterns and textiles in their day to day lives. I also wanted a lot of warm clothes and sweaters to reflect the colder climate of Chicago, where the play is set.
